What is the 64% Challenge?

Right now 64% of people at work are disengaged
…at best they are clock watching and at worst they could be one of the 13% who are actively seeking their escape route, spreading negativity and delivering minimum levels of performance.
Over half of the working population are unfulfilled yet, “Workers are hungry for trust, social cohesion, and purpose. They want to feel that their contributions are recognised and that their team is truly collaborative. They desire clear responsibilities and opportunities to learn and grow. They expect their personal sense of purpose to align with that of their organization. And they want an appropriate physical and digital environment that gives them the flexibility to achieve that elusive work–life balance” Mckinsey, (2021).
Yet 64% of people at work still remain disengaged and this has to change.
How much better could our lives be if so much wasted potential was harnessed?
As a business psychologist whose practice is grounded in the application of positive psychology, I know there is a better way and as a seasoned leader used to forming effective teams from dysfunctional foundations I know how quick it can be to transform our daily work experience.
And countless studies, reliable research, say so too.
People who report having a positive employee experience have 16 times the engagement level of employees with a negative experience, and that they are eight times more likely to want to stay at a company. That’s a fact so powerful it’s worth repeating, “people who report having a positive employee experience have 16 times the engagement level of employees with a negative experience, and that they are eight times more likely to want to stay at a company” (McKinsey, 2020).
Often the problem is not of our own making, we are new in position and have inherited a toxic culture which needs transforming.
The causes of disengagement at work are many and complex yet the actions an individual leader can make to improve the lives of those around them can offer rapid relief and rekindle lost passion quickly.
I think we can do better and this is the ‘WHY’ that drives i3 Leadership®
